Design Strategies and Innovative Concepts
Preserve the existing character of the ancient village was paramount for this project. Primary considerations included maintaining existing passageways and courtyard spaces while creating new views and programs on the upper portion of the village site. Most of the upper site was not able to be preserved, therefore the major public space programs, new construction, are located there with the conference center (related project) located at the lower most point. Meandering the path from the upper hotel to the lower conference center, guests are transported to an ancient time. This effect is strengthened through the use of clean lined, simple details, materials, color, and light echoing the ancient past, yet expressed in modern architectural language. This subtle contrast in style highlights the preserved remnants of the ancient Anhui architecture characterized by celebrated entryways with ornate carvings, distinct parapets, white walls, black roof tiles, and timber frames.
